New York's Loft Scene Comes to Wunderkammer: Interview with Michael Patterson PyleStyle Events

Michael Patterson is one of the two guys Alicia refers to as her "Jazz Dads." I met him at Club Soda, where he was performing, as he often does, with APQ. The first thing you notice about him is his easy way with people--and I mean all people.

But the second thing you'll find out if you talk to him at any length is that he's a brilliant storyteller. On several occasions, I remember thinking, Man, I wish I could record these stories somehow.

Well, I finally got my chance.

For this episode of the Keepin' It Local Podcast, Alicia and I went to Mike's home to talk about The Big Apple Jazz Club Series, the brainchild of his friend and mentor Ketu Oladuwa. The performances take place on the second Sunday of every month at Wunderkammer Company. Michael himself will be playing with his band A Love Supreme Ensemble on July 8.

In the episode, you'll hear about how Ketu envisioned the series as recreating the vibe of the loft era in New York, where musicians were free to experiment because they could count on the audience's openness. Then you'll hear some stories about how Michael learned to be the great bassist he's too humble to admit he is.

Take a listen, enjoy, and let us know what you think.
